Message Size Limit

Answers to common questions regarding sending attachments.

I keep getting a message stating "Message Size Limit Exceeded?

How can I send a message that exceeds the size limit?
Are there other ways to share  and transfer files?
How do I compress a file?

Q  Why did I get an error saying "Message Size Limit Exceeded"?
A  The Message size is grater then the allowed  size limit.

Parkland Health and Hospitals GroupWise email system has a "Maximum Send Message" size limit of 5 MB per email.
If a user tries to send an email that is larger then 5 MB the following message will appear.

Message size limit exceeded

Q  Is there a way to try and send a message that is over the 5 MB limit?
A  Try one of the following work arounds.

1   Try zipping the file attachments to compress them.

Zipped files can compress as much as 80 percent for MS Word or Excel documents.

2   If the email contains several attachments, you can try splitting the attachments into two or
more emails so that the size of each email falls within the 5 MB limit.
3   If you need to send large emails on a regular basis.
A Departmental Group Mailbox can be created for this purpose.

( Call the Service Desk at X25999 to have an account created)

Q  Are there other ways to share files?
A  Suggested Alternate Methods for sharing files

1  A network share can be created for storing and sharing files with others at parkland.
( Call the Service Desk at X25999 for assistance in setting up a network share)

2  If you are needing to send yourself emails with attachments for the purpose of having
    files available from home.

You should apply for a RAS login. “Dial up Remote access”.

(Call the Service Desk at X25999 for more information)

Q  How do I compress a file?
A  You can use WinZip to compress files.

1  Right click on the file you want to compress.
2  Select "Add to zip file".
By default the file will be compressed and saved with a ".zip" extension.
The original file will be left intact.
3 You can then send the zipped "compressed file"  via email if it is under 5 MB in size.
